About this Position
We are looking for an experienced professional who can lead and grow our housing practice area, with a focus on helping communities provide safe, healthy, and affordable housing in great places to live and work. This housing planner/specialist will win and manage housing projects, including Housing Elements as part of focused or comprehensive general plan updates, consolidated plans, and housing-related updates to codes and development regulations. Responsibilities also include research of precedents as well as analysis that advances the field.
Required experience includes working closely with local government staff, engaging a diversity of stakeholders, facilitating difficult and contentious discussions, and partnering with HCD, HUD, CAHA, and developers. Candidates will be expected to take initiative, work independently, manage multiple projects concurrently, supervise and mentor staff and consultants, be an excellent communicator and collaborator, and represent the firm professionally.
The interests and experience of the ideal candidate should extend beyond RHNA and housing elements and include the connections between housing and regional planning, land use, transportation, environmental justice, resilience, real estate, economic development, and fiscal stability. Beyond crafting plans and policies that are consistent with state and federal law, the preferred candidate is an innovator who finds creative local solutions and leverages mandates to advance broader community priorities. We seek a colleague who over time will develop housing best practices and influence broader housing policy.
Master’s degree in planning, public policy, urban design, or other housing-related fields
Minimum of 6-10 years of relevant work experience, including managing a variety of housing-related projects. A significant portion of the experience must be work completed in California
Excellent research, analytical, writing, and oral communication skills
Experience shaping and facilitating community engagement programs in diverse communities
Experience working with the California Department of Housing and Community Development
AICP certification and experience with geospatial analysis are preferred
