About the Position & Firm
R+A is hiring a Healthy Communities and Environmental Justice Manager with 10+ years of relevant work experience. R+A has long been a leader in promoting health and equity in planning and we are seeking to expand our practice in health, equity, and environmental justice. The position offers the opportunity to integrate health, equity, and authentic community engagement into planning and design projects in a way that advances the field. The ideal candidate will strengthen our existing relationships and build new partnerships with planning, public health, and environmental justice leaders, organizations, and firms.
R+A is a mission-driven planning, policy, urban design, and research firm with offices in Berkeley and Los Angeles, CA. We bring a multidisciplinary approach to planning, design, policy, and applied research. To address the complexity of communities, R+A integrates interrelated disciplines — land use and urban design, sustainability and green building, public health and equity, and community engagement — into planning and applied research efforts.
Work on a wide variety of projects including community health and environmental justice components of General Plans; Health Impact Assessments; trainings; equity frameworks for government agencies; data analysis; and other studies focused on equity and environmental justice.
Oversee the use of quantitative and geospatial methods to evaluate how changes in the physical, social, economic, and environmental conditions may impact health outcomes.
Engage a diversity of stakeholders and facilitating challenging and contentious discussions.
Manage projects concurrently, work with diverse teams, and mentor staff members.
Work closely with senior management to shape and expand the strategic direction of the firm; identify new opportunities to integrate health and equity into the firm’s planning and urban design projects.
Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree Policy, Sustainability, Planning, Public Health, or related field.
Minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience.
Excellent research, analytical, writing, and oral communication skills.
Experience leading community engagement programs in diverse communities.
Proven commitment to incorporating community health, environmental justice, and equity into local and regional planning and urban design processes.
Understanding of California planning law and the implementation of SB 1000.
