About the Position & Firm

R+A is hiring Senior and Intermediate Planners with 3+ years of relevant work experience including familiarity with general plans, specific plans, zoning codes, and other planning documents. The position offers the opportunity to take on a range of responsibilities, including writing planning policy, conducting GIS and technical analysis, supporting community engagement, helping manage projects, and assisting with business development and proposal writing. The ideal candidate should be an independent self-starter who enjoys a casual and fun work environment but can multi-task and remain organized and focused within the fast-paced demands of consulting.

R+A is a mission-driven planning, policy, urban design, and research firm with offices in Berkeley and Los Angeles, CA. We bring a multidisciplinary approach to planning, design, policy, and applied research. To address the complexity of communities, R+A integrates interrelated disciplines — land use and urban design, sustainability and green building, public health and equity, and community engagement — into planning and applied research efforts.


  • Supporting a wide variety of projects including general plans, specific plans, housing elements, zoning codes and stakeholder engagement processes.

  • Writing, research, and policy development for planning documents.

  • Preparing maps and graphics.

  • Assisting with preparation and facilitation of inclusive public engagement efforts.

  • Preparing proposals and supporting advance marketing.

Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in planning or closely related field.

  • Relevant work experience in the planning field, including familiarity with general plans, specific plans, zoning codes, and other planning documents.

  • Intermediate Planner: Minimum of 3+ years of relevant planning work experience.

  • Senior Planner: Minimum of 6+ years of relevant work experience

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative data analysis, mapping, and design.

  • Experience using ArcGIS or similar mapping software.

  • Experience working on public engagement programs in diverse communities.

  • Fluency in spoken and/or written Spanish and knowledge of California land use planning is desired but not required.
