Safe + Healthy Communities Element
Lynwood, CA
2017 SCAG Sustainability Award for Healthy and Safe Communities / 2015 APA Los Angeles Section Award for Planning Best Practices
Description
Raimi + Associates led a community planning process to create a Safe and Healthy Communities General Plan Element for the City of Lynwood, the first element of its kind to include both safety and health. The City obtained funding for this project through a Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Sustainability Program grant. The process included a detailed existing conditions report that presented data describing the social, demographic, behavioral, and physical determinants and conditions that relate to community health and safety. A project-specific Community Advisory Committee was created to guide the project’s direction. Two public workshops allowed community members to recommend and prioritize health related policies and programs.
The adopted Element provides the City with a comprehensive and functional policy framework to improve health and safety through prioritized goals, policies, and actions. The element also includes an implementation action program to guide city staff’s day-to-day activities.
