Our Firm

Founded in 2006, R+A provides consulting services that support healthy, sustainable, and equitable communities. Our work includes General Plans and comprehensive plans for cities and counties, corridor and downtown plans, zoning codes and design standards, health policy, climate action plans, social research, and program evaluation. We have a national reputation for creating visionary and forward-looking plans, conducting authentic community engagement, incorporating health and equity into planning projects, promoting sustainable neighborhoods, and preparing plans that balance vision with market realities. Many of our projects win awards and in 2015 R+A received the APA Award for National Emerging Planning and Design Firm of the Year.

Our Mission

Working collaboratively with our clients, R+A channels our passion and expertise to foster healthy, equitable, and resilient communities.

Our History

Matt Raimi founded Raimi + Associates in 2006 as a mission-based consulting firm focused on creating healthy, sustainable, and equitable communities. The firm’s first projects include the City of South Gate, CA General Plan (one of the first General Plans in the country to include a stand-alone health element), technical assistance to the US Green Building Council for LEED for Neighborhood Development, and co-writing policy guidance on how to integrate health into General Plans. These projects established the firm as a leader in shaping innovative General Plans, integrating health and the built environment, creating sustainable neighborhoods, and facilitating authentic community engagement.

As the firm grew, we added new areas of expertise and expanded our services to include urban design and specific plans, zoning codes, objective design standards, climate action and adaptation plans, health and equity assessment tools, strategic planning, program evaluation, and graphic design. While much of our work is in our home state of California, we have conducted projects across the country, including Washington, DC, Philadelphia (PA), Gary (IN), Louisville (KY), Austin (TX), Nashville (TN), Aurora (CO), Beaverton (OR), and Honolulu (HI).

Looking forward, communities face great challenges and opportunities. Climate change, structural inequities, institutional racism, the changing shape of work, and emerging technologies are changing the shape of cities and how communities need to plan for the future. We are excited by these challenges and will remain true to our vision: a world where everyone - regardless of race, income, gender and sexual orientation, religion, or immigration status - has the opportunity to live in healthy, safe, sustainable, and equitable communities.

Our Services

R+A takes a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to meet the complex needs of the communities we work with. We integrate our expertise across multiple disciplines — land use and urban design, sustainability and green building, public health and equity, evaluation and assessment, community engagement, and applied research – to shape and create innovative processes, policies, and plans.
